How To Perform Roku Setup For Surround Sound?

Movies and TV shows that you can access through Roku device are available in stereo, but some are also available in surround sound. The majority of Roku devices are not capable of decoding surround sound formats like DTS or Dolby Digital, they can pass through the signal to an audio/video receiver (AVR), TV or Sound Bar that has the capability of decoding surround sound.

Connecting your Roku device:

Start with connecting High-Speed HDMI cable to HDMI port on the back of Roku device. If you are using Roku streaming stick, then directly connect it to the HDMI input.

Determine how to connect audio for surround sound. Also, confirm whether you want to use an HDMI connection or will connect an optical cable for audio.

1. Use HDMI for Audio

Use HDMI for audio as well as video in order to get the best performance with the simplest configuration. If Roku device has the ability to display content in 4K or 4K HDR, then make sure that you review 4K/4K HDR requirements along with setup instructions.

If your Roku device is ready to be connected to other devices, then here is what you are going to do:

Connect directly to a surround sound compatible TV

Connect that end of the HDMI that is not attached to Roku device directly to the TV or connect Roku streaming stick to an available HDMI input on the TV.

Connect to a sound bar or an AVR with HDMI ports

Many sound bars and AVRs are designed to be one point where you can switch audio and video between the devices connected via HDMI.

  1. Connect that end of the HDMI cable, which isn’t attached to Roku. If you are using Roku Streaming Stick, then directly connect it to an available HDMI input on sound bar or AVR.
  2. In the output port of the sound bar or AVR, you need to connect a premium high-speed HDMI cable. The other end of this cable will be connected to the available HDMI input on the TV.

Connect to a TV and sound bar or AVR that is capable of ARC functionality

If all your devices support ARC, then the process will be a lot easier, as the soundbar or AVR can now easily receive audio from TV’s tuner and devices that are connected to the HDMI inputs of the TV besides Roku device. You can also switch audio and video between your devices from the TV with this configuration.

2. Using optical (S/PDIF) for audio

If the sound bar or AVR contains no HDMI inputs, or the Roku device has an optical port that you want to use, then you can follow below-mentioned options:

Connect to a sound bar or an AVR without HDMI ports

You can use this option when there aren’t any HDMI input on the soundbar or AVR, but there has to be a minimum of one optical input.

  1. Connect that end of the HDMI cable, which isn’t attached to Roku. If you are using Roku Streaming Stick, then directly connect it to an available HDMI input on sound bar or AVR.
  2. On the output of your TV, connect an optical cable. Another end of the cable will be connected to the input port of the sound bar or AVR.

Connect to a sound bar or an AVR by making use of optical for audio

If your Roku device has an optical connector, and the sound bar or AVR doesn’t support HDMI, then use this option. In this configuration, you can easily switch video sources on the TV and audio sources on the sound bar or AVR.
